Articles

A, An এবং The কে  Article বলে। Article সাধারণত Noun বা Noun Group এর পূর্বে বসে।আবার, articles হল Determiner Group এর সদস্য।তাই article ও determiner এক সাথে বসে না।

Article দুই প্রকার- 1. Indefinite Article 2. Definite Article

Indefinite Article:- A এবং An কে Indefinite Article বলে। কারণ এরা কোন অনির্দিষ্ট, ব্যক্তি, প্রাণী ও বস্তুকে বোঝায়। Singular Countable Noun এর পূর্বে a/an বসে। অর্থগত দিক থেকে এদের মধ্যে কোন পার্থক্য নেই, তবে ব্যবহারের দিক থেকে এদের মধ্যে পার্থক্য রয়েছে। যেমনঃ- He bought a pen. The girl took an apple.  

Definite Article:- The কে Definite Article বলা হয় কারণ ইহা এক বা একাধিকবস্তু বা প্রাণীকে নির্দিষ্ট করে বুঝায়।Singular ও Plural উভয় প্রকার Noun এর পূর্বে Definite Article বসে। যেমনঃ- The rich are not always happy.

      Uses of A & An

1.   Word বা শব্দের শুরুতে consonant থাকলে তার পূর্বে a এবং vowel(a, e, i, o, u)থাকলে তার পূর্বে an বসে।যেমনঃ- a man, a woman, a lady, a boy, a girl, a hen, a cat, a dog, a cow, a lion, a horse, a pen, a bag, a table, a tree, a pupil, a river, an egg, an apple, an ear an ant, an elephant, an ass, an ox, an orange, an umbrella, an actor, an actress, an idiot, an enemy, an Indian, an inkpot ইত্যাদি।

2.  শব্দের প্রথম অক্ষর যদি h থাকে এবং তা যদি ‘হ’ এর মত উচ্চারিত হয় তবে তার পূর্বে  a বসে এবং h উচ্চারিত না হলে তার পূর্বে an বসে।যেমনঃ- ‍a hotel, a horse, a historian, a humble, an hour, an heir, an honest man, an honorable man ইত্যাদি।

3.  You(ইউ)-এর মত উচ্চারিত Vowel দিয়ে শুরু হয় এমন word এর পূর্বে a বসে।যেমনঃ- a ewe, a European, a university, a uniform, a useful animal, a unique sight, a union ইত্যাদি।

4.  O দিয়ে গঠিত সমস্ত শব্দের পূর্বে an বসে। শুধুমাত্র One যুক্ত শব্দের পূর্বে a বসে। যেমনঃ- an open heart surgery, an opera, an orange, an open field, a one eyed man, a one taka note ইত্যাদি।

5.  সংক্ষিপ্ত(abbreviation) প্রথম অক্ষর Vowel এর মত উচ্চারিত হলে তার পূর্বে an এবং Consonant এর মত উচ্চারিত হলে তার পূর্বে a বসে। যেমনঃ- an M.A., an M.P., an M.B.B.S., an F.R.C.S., an F.C.P.S., a B.A., a B.Sc., a D.Sc a B.A.G ইত্যাদি।

6.  কোন নির্দিষ্ট ব্যক্তি বা বস্তুকে না বুঝিয়ে একটি ব্যক্তি বা বস্তুকে বুঝায় এমন noun এর পূর্বে a/an বসে।যেমনঃ- He bought a ice-cream. I live tiny room.

7.  The same(একই), a certain(কোন এক)ইত্যাদি অর্থ প্রকাশ করতে singular common noun এর পূর্বে a/an বসে। যেমনঃ- Criminals are of a character. There lived a king.

8.  এক জাতীয় সকলকে বুঝাতে singular common noun এর পূর্বে a/an বসে। যেমনঃ- A dog is a faithful animal. An ant is industrious.

9.  Each, every, some, many, a kind of, the last ইত্যাদি বুঝাতে a/an বসে। যেমনঃ- He earns five hundred taka a month. I have a chance of getting the reward.

10. Exclamation বুঝাতে what, how, such ইত্যাদির পরে a/an বসে। যেমনঃ- What a nice bird it is!

11. Mr/Mrs/Miss এর পূর্বে a/an বসে। যেমনঃ- A Mr. Karim called at my office.

12. Couple, dozen, score(20), hundred, thousand, thousand, million, প্রভৃতির পূর্বে ‘a’  বসে। যেমনঃ- There are a thousand people. They sold a dozen pens.

13. Plural Noun এর পূর্বে few, little, good many, lot of, great many, good deal ইত্যাদি ব্যবহৃত হলে তাদের পূর্বে ‘a’ বসে। যেমনঃ- He earns a lot of money. There are a few apples on the table.

14. কখনও কখনও Preposition অর্থে a ব্যবহৃত হয়, তখন সেই ‘a’ কে Disguised Preposition বলে। যেমনঃ- The king went a (on) hunting.

15. কিছু কিছু Phrase এর পূর্বে a/an বসে। যেমনঃ- In a body, in a hurry, in a nutshell, in a fix, in a temper, to take an interest.

16. Abstract Noun যখন Common Noun রূপে ব্যবহৃত হয় তখন তার পূর্বে a/an বসে। যেমনঃ- Helen was a beauty.

17. তুলনা অর্থে Proper Noun যখন Common Noun হিসেবে ব্যবহৃত হয় তখন তার পূর্বে a/an বসে। যেমনঃ- I see you are a Wordsworth.

18. Adjective এর পূর্বে so, too ইত্যাদি থাকলে ইহাদের পরে a/an বসে। যেমনঃ-Iron is so useful metal.

     Uses of Definite Article

1.   এক জাতীয় সকলকে বুঝাতে Singular Noun-এর পূর্বে The বসে। যেমনঃ-The cow is a useful animal. The rose is a nice flower. The cat is fond of milk.

2.  নির্দিষ্ট করে বুঝাতে উভয় Number এর পূর্বে The বসে। যেমনঃ- The boys are playing. The girl is reading.

3.  একক বস্তু যেমন- চন্দ্র, সূর্য, পৃথিবী, নক্ষত্র, দিক ইত্যাদি নামের পূর্বে The বসে। যেমনঃ- Look at the moon. The sun rises in the east. The earth moves round the sun.

4.  পবিত্র ধর্মগ্রন্থ ও পত্রিকার নামের পূর্বে The বসে। যেমনঃ- The holy Quran, The Bible, The Ramayan. The Observer, The Daily Star, The Ittefaq, The Prothom Alo.

5.  বিখ্যাত অট্রালিকা, নদী, সাগর, উপসাগর, মহাসাগর, পর্বতশ্রেণী, দীপপুঞ্জ, জাহাজ, ট্রেন ইত্যাদি নামের পূর্বে The বসে। যেমনঃ- The Tajmahal, The Padma, The Meghna, The Jamuna, The Arabian Sea, The Andamans, The Himalayas, The Bay of Bengal, The Titanic, The Suborna Express ইত্যাদি।

6.  জাতি বা সম্প্রদায়ের নামের পূর্বে The বসে। যেমনঃ- The English, The Muslims, The pious, The rich, The poor ইত্যাদি।

7.  তারিখের নামের পূর্বে The বসে। যেমনঃ- The 26^th March, 16^th December, The 21^st February.

8.  ভৌগলিক বা বর্ণনামূলক নামের পূর্বে The বসে। যেমনঃ- The U.S.A. The Punjab, The Decean.

9.  Possessive Adjective এর পরিবর্তে Common Noun এর ক্ষেত্রে The ব্যবহৃত হয়। যেমনঃ- The teacher pulled the boy by the (his) ear.

10. Proper Noun -এর পূর্বে Adjective থাকলে উক্ত Adjective এর পূর্বে The বসে। যেমনঃ- The great Omar was the second caliph of Islam. Alexander the great was a brave warrior.

11. কোন বাদ্যযন্ত্র বা Pop group এর পূর্বে The বসে। যেমনঃ- He plays the piano. The miles.

12. কিছু Phrase এর পূর্বে The বসে। যেমনঃ-I am in the wrong. in the right.

13. কতিপয় Collective Noun এর পূর্বে The বসে। যেমনঃ-The elite, The peasantry, The audience ইত্যাদি। 

14. Adjective যুক্ত কতিপয় Proper Noun বা Noun + of + Proper Noun এর পূর্বে The বসে। যেমনঃ-The University of Dhaka, the National Science Museum.

15. দুই বা ততোধিক অবিবাহিত বোনের নিকট লিখিত চিঠির উপর একত্রে সম্বোধন করলে তার পূর্বে The বসে। যেমনঃ- The Misses + Surname : The Misses + Khan

16.  সংখ্যা প্রকাশক যে Word একটি অর্থে বসে, তার পূর্বে The বসে। যেমনঃ- He sells mangoes by the hundred. (hundreds হবে না) The man buys eggs by the dozen. (dozens হবে না)

17. Superlative Degree এর পূর্বে The বসে। যেমনঃ- He is the best boy in the class.

18. দুইয়ের মধ্যে তুলনা বুঝাতে Adjective এর Comparative Degree এর পূর্বে The বসে। যেমনঃ- Reba is the better of the two girls.

19. ‘যত…..তত’ বুঝাতে Adverb রূপে ব্যবহৃত Comparative Degree এর পূর্বে The বসে। যেমনঃ-The sooner, the better.

20. যেসব Noun দ্বারা পেশা বা বৃত্তি বুঝায় সেসব Noun এর পূর্বে The বসে। যেমনঃ- He joined the army.

21. Ordinal Number যখন অক্ষর দ্বারা লেখা হয় তখন তার পূর্বে The বসে। যেমনঃ- Edward the seventh, George the sixth. (কিন্ত Ordinal Number যখন Roman figure দ্বারা্ লেখা হয় তখন Ordinal Number এর পূর্বে The লিখতে হয় না তবে পড়ার সময় The পড়তে হয়)    

22. প্রসিদ্ধ ঐতিহাসিক নামের পূর্বে The বসে। যেমনঃ- Ibrahim Lodi was defeated in the battle of Panipath.

23. Singular designation এর পূর্বে The বসে। যেমনঃ- The President, The Prime Minister, The Headmaster ইত্যাদি।

24. কোন Noun যখন Superlative Degree এর গুরুত্ব বুঝায় তখন তার পূর্বে The বসে। যেমনঃ- James is the singer of the day. Humayun Ahmed is the novelist of the day.

25. Plural পরিবারের নামের পূর্বে The বসে। যেমনঃ- The Mughals, The Pathans, The Khans ইত্যাদি।

26. কোন Adjective/Adjective Phrase বা Adjective clause দ্বারা কোন Common Noun কে নির্দিষ্ট করা হলে তার পূর্বে The বসে। যেমনঃ- The man who came here yesterday is my friend.

27. কোন Abstract quality বুঝাতে উক্ত adjective এর পূর্বে The বসে। যেমনঃ- People love the brave.

28. কোন নির্দিষ্ট ব্যক্তি বা বস্তুর গুন বুঝাতে Abstract Noun এর পূর্বে The বসে। যেমনঃ- The kindness of Mohsin is known to all.

29. Common Noun এবং Adjective যদি Abstract এর মত ব্যবহৃত হয়, তখন তাদের পূর্বে The বসে। যেমনঃ- The mother(motherly feeling) rose in her.

30. একই গুনসম্পন্ন দুই ব্যক্তি বা বস্তুর সহিত তুলনা করা হলে যার সাথে তুলনা করা হয় তার পূর্বে The বসে। যেমনঃ- Nazrul is the Shelly of Bengal.

31. Material Noun এর পূর্বে The বসে না। তবে নির্দিষ্ট স্থানের বা নির্দিষ্ট প্রকারের পদার্থ বুঝালে Material Noun এর পূর্বে The বসে। যেমনঃ- The perfume of Saudi Arabia is famous.

32. দশক বা শতাব্দীর পূর্বে The ব্যবহৃত হয়। যেমনঃ- The 1900s. The last century.

      Omission Of Articles

1.   Plural Noun এর পূর্বে a/an বসে না।যেমনঃ- Horses are running.

2.  মানব জাতির পূর্বে Article বসে না।যেমনঃ- Man is mortal.

3.  রাস্তা বা পার্কের নামের পূর্বে The বসে না। যেমনঃ-I went to Ramna Park.

4.  খেলার নামের পূর্বে The বসে না। যেমনঃ- I play cricket.

5.  ঋতু বা উৎসবের নামের পূর্বে Article বসে না।যেমনঃ- Summer, Winter, Spring ইত্যাদি।

6.  দেশের নামের পূর্বে Article বসে না।যেমনঃ- Bangladesh is a developing country.

7.  ব্যক্তির নামের পূর্বে The বসে না। যেমনঃ- Muhib is a good man.

8.  Proper এর পূর্বে The বসে না। যেমনঃ- Dhaka is the capital of Bangladesh.

9.  কোন Proper Noun এর Apposition রূপে যদি কোন rank বা profession বোধক Common Noun   থাকে তাহলে ঐ Common Noun এর আগে The বসে না।যেমনঃ- Mr. Rahman, Headmaster of our school, is a good man.

10. নাবিক হিসেবে সাগরে যাওয়া বুঝালে Sea এর পূর্বে The বসে না। যেমনঃ- The mariner went to sea on voyage.

11. Possessive এর পরের Noun এর পূর্বে The বসে না। যেমনঃ- This is my Book.

12. নির্দিষ্ট করে না বুঝালে Abstract Noun এর আগে The বসে না। যেমনঃ- Kindness is a great virtue.

13. Home, Mosque, Church, School, Hospital, Town ইত্যাদি Word এর পূর্বে The বসে না। যেমনঃ- He is at home.

14. Elect, select, make, appoint ইত্যাদি verb এর Complement এর আগে The বসে না। যেমনঃ- We made him captain. They elected me chairman.

15. Abstract Noun এর পূর্বে The বসে না। যেমনঃ- Honesty is the best policy.

16. বস্তুবাচক Noun এর পূর্বে The বসে না। যেমনঃ- Iron is a useful metal. Gold is a precious metal.
