Tag Questions

·         Tag Question: ‘‘Tag’’  অর্থ জুড়ে দেয়া এবং  ‘‘Question’’  অর্থ প্রশ্ন। Conversation/কথোপকথনের সময় Sentence এর শেষে শ্রোতার স্বীকৃতি বা সমর্থন চেয়ে যে প্রশ্নটি সংযোগ করা হয়, তাকে Tag Question বলে।

• ·         Tag Question এর নিয়মঃ-

1.      মূল Sentence টি অপরিবর্তিত অবস্থায় বসে + comma(,) +  Tag Question + note of interrogation(?) বসে।

2.      Tag Question  এ শুধু Subject এবং auxiliary verb বসবে।

3.      Affirmative sentence এর Negative tag হয় এবং Negative sentence এর Affirmative tag হয়।

Bird’s can fly, can’t they?

4.      Tag Question এর Subject সব সময় Pronoun  এ ব্যবহৃত হয়।

5.      Tag Question গঠনে যে সকল auxiliary verb ব্যবহৃত হয়, সেগুলোকে operator বা সহকারী verb বলে। এগুলো হচ্ছে- am, is, are, was, were, shall, should, can, could, may, might, will, would, have, has, had, must, ought to, do, does, did, dare, need, used to.

6.      Tag Question সব সময় Sentence এর শেষে বসে।

• Short form of Negative Tag:

am not	aren’t / ain’t	has not	hasn’t	should not	shouldn’t
is not	isn’t	had not	hadn’t	must not	mustn’t
are not	aren’t / ain’t	shall not	shan’t	might not	mightn’t
was not	wasn’t	will not	won’t	do not	don’t
were not	weren’t	can not	can’t	does not	doesn’t
have not	haven’t	could not	couldn’t	did not	didn’t

Several Important Rules of Tag Question:

Rule-1.  সাহায্যকারী verb যুক্ত Sentence কে Tag Question -এ রূপান্তর করার সময় প্রদত্ত Sentence এর সাহায্যকারী verb যুক্ত হয়ে  positive sentence এর ক্ষেত্রে Negative tag বসে।     

•   Structure: প্রদত্ত Sentence টি অপরিবর্তিত অবস্থায় বসে + comma(,) +  প্রদত্ত sentence এর  auxiliary verb + n’t + উক্ত sentence এর Subject টি পুনরায় বসে + note of interrogation(?) বসে।

         He is a liar, isn’t he?  Karim can’t swim, can he? He is crying, isn’t he? I am a student, aren’t / ain’t I?

Rule-2.  যদি কোন Sentence এ সাহায্যকারী verb না থাকে তখন  Tag Question গঠনে Present Indefinite Tense এ do/does এবং Past Indefinite Tense এ did বসে। 

•    Structure: প্রদত্ত Sentence টি অপরিবর্তিত অবস্থায় বসে + comma(,) +  do/does/didn’t + উক্ত sentence এর Subject টি পুনরায় বসে + note of interrogation(?) বসে।

         He lives in Dhaka, doesn’t he? We play cricket, don’t we?  She sang well, didn’t she?

Rule-3.  সাহায্যকারী verb যুক্ত Negative Sentence কে Tag Question -এ রূপান্তর করার সময় প্রদত্ত Sentence এর সাহায্যকারী verb যুক্ত হয়ে negative sentence এর ক্ষেত্রে positive/affirmative tag হয়।    

• Structure: প্রদত্ত Sentence টি অপরিবর্তিত অবস্থায় বসে + comma(,) +  প্রদত্ত sentence এর  auxiliary verb + উক্ত sentence এর Subject টি পুনরায় বসে+ note of interrogation(?) বসে।

         He can’t swim, can he? He has not done the work, has he?

Rule-4. There যুক্ত Sentence এর There কে Subject হিসেবে ব্যবহার করে tag question করা হয়। তবে Positive থাকলে Negative এবং Negative থাকলে Positive  tag হয়।

  There is something wrong with him, isn’t there? There is no pond in this village, is there?

Rule-5. We যুক্ত: যদি মূল Sentence এর Subject Plural হয়। তবে We ব্যতীত অন্য সব ক্ষেত্রে tag এ রূপান্তরের সময় auxiliary verb এর পর They বসে।

  Birds fly in the sky, don’t they?  Birds can fly, can’t they? Fishes can swim, can’t they?

Rule-6. Imperative Sentence এ যখন শ্রোতার সম্মতি আহবান করা হয় তখন won’t you ব্যবহৃত হয়।এ ছাড়া যখন কোন কিছু করতে বলা/ অনুরোধ করা হয় তখন will you/ would you/ can you/ can’t you / could you/ couldn’t you বসে। 

• Structure: প্রদত্ত Sentence টি অপরিবর্তিত অবস্থায় বসে + comma(,) +  won’t you /will you/ would you/ can you/ can’t you / could you/ couldn’t you + note of interrogation(?)  বসে।যেমনঃ-  Open the door, won’t you? Open the door please, will you/ would you/ can you/ can’t you / could you/ couldn’t you?

Rule-7. Let’s যুক্ত Imperative Sentence এর শেষে shall we ব্যবহার করে tag question করতে হয়।  

• Structure: প্রদত্ত Sentence টি অপরিবর্তিত অবস্থায় বসে + comma(,) +  shall we + note of interrogation(?) বসে। যেমনঃ-Let’s go out for a walk, shall we?   Let’s do the work, shall we?

Rule-8. Don’t যুক্ত Imperative Sentence এর শেষে will you ব্যবহার করে tag question করতে হয়। 

•  Structure: প্রদত্ত Sentence টি অপরিবর্তিত অবস্থায় বসে + comma(,) +  will you + note of interrogation(?) বসে। যেমনঃ-  Don’t forget me, will you?   Don’t waste your time, will you?

Rule-9. Everybody, everyone, somebody, someone, anybody, anyone,   nobody, none, neither  প্রভৃতি কোন Sentence এর Subject হলে tag question করার সময়ঐ সমস্ত Subject এর পরিবর্তে Pronoun  they ব্যবহৃত হয়। 

•  Structure: প্রদত্ত Sentence টি অপরিবর্তিত অবস্থায় বসে + comma(,)+ প্রদত্ত sentence এর auxiliary verb(tense অনুযায়ী )  + they + note of interrogation(?) বসে। যেমনঃ- 

       Everybody saw you, didn’t they? Every mother loves her child, don’t they?

       Nobody went there, did they? Neither of them went, did they? Nobody phoned, did they?

 Rule. 10. যদি কোন Sentence এ Subject টি Nothing, anything, something, everything ব্যবহৃত হলে tag question এ  Subject হিসেবে  it  হয়। 

• Structure: প্রদত্ত Sentence টি অপরিবর্তিত অবস্থায় বসে + comma(,)+ প্রদত্ত sentence এর auxiliary verb  + it + note of interrogation(?) বসে। যেমনঃ-   

             Nothing is certain, is it?  Nothing can concern you, can it?

Rule-11. Be verb যুক্ত Exclamatory sentence এর ক্ষেত্রে tag question করার সময় isn’t / aren’t বসে এবং  Subject noun  হলে pronoun টি বসে।  

• Structure: প্রদত্ত Sentence টি অপরিবর্তিত অবস্থায় বসে + comma(,)+ isn’t / aren’t  + প্রদত্ত sentence এর Subject বসে + note of interrogation(?) বসে। যেমনঃ-  How beautiful the garden is, isn’t it? 

Rule-12. মূল verb যুক্ত Exclamatory sentence এর ক্ষেত্রে tag question করার সময় don’t / doesn’t / didn’t বসে এবং  Subject noun  হলে pronoun টি বসে।  

• Structure: প্রদত্ত Sentence টি অপরিবর্তিত অবস্থায় বসে +comma(,)+don’t / doesn’t / didn’t(tense অনুযায়ী) + প্রদত্ত sentence এর Subject বসে + note of interrogation(?) বসে।যেমনঃ-  

    How sweetly the bird sings, doesn’t it? 

Rule-13. Hardly, rarely, scarcely, barely, never, seldom, few, little etc. Negative  অর্থে ব্যবহৃত হয় তখন tag question টি Affirmative tag হয়। যেমনঃ  

 A barking dog seldom bites, does it?  She hardly comes here, does she?

Rule-14. মূল বাক্যে Subject & Auxiliary verb সংক্ষিপ্ত আকারে অবস্থান করলে tag question করার আগে সংক্ষিপ্ত আকারের সঠিক রূপটি নিশ্চিত করতে হবে। 

 He’d go there, wouldn’t he? He’d gone there, hadn’t he?

   N/B: যদি Verb টি Present form এর হয় তাহলে He’d কে He would ধরতে হবে। আর যদি Verb টি Past participle এর হয় তাহলে He’d কে He had ধরতে হবে।

Rule-15. কোন বাক্যে যদি শুধু have/has/had থাকে এবং কোনো মূল Verb না থাকে তাহলে নিন্মলিখিত উপায়ে tag question করতে হবে। যেমনঃ-

  He had a sharp look, hadn’t he? (British).  He had a sharp look, hadn’t he?(American).

Rule-16.  ‘I’  যুক্ত affirmative sentence কে  tag question করার সময় প্রদত্ত Sentence টি অপরিবর্তিত অবস্থায় বসে + comma(,) + aren’t + I + ? বসে। যেমনঃ-  

I am happy, aren’t I?

Rule-17. কোন Sentence  এ Principal Clause এবং Subordinate Clause থাকলে Principal Clause টির tag Question করতে হবে। যেমনঃ-   It is found that an ancient king had many wives, isn’t it?

Rule-18. সাধারনত Dialogue  এর ক্ষেত্রে দুই বা ততোধিক sentence এর শেষে বা মাঝে tag Question করতে হলে,সেক্ষেত্রে sentence এর শেষে শূন্যস্থান দেয়া থাকবে সেটিকে বিবেচনা করে tag Question করতে হবে। যেমনঃ-  

     Look, here he comes, doesn’t he?

     Yes, sir, I know him. He came here yesterday, didn’t he?

     No, I don’t believe this. You know he is very honest, isn’t he? Then how can he steal the watch?

               Exercise

1.   None can do it, can they?

2.   They came here, didn’t they?

3.    He seldom comes to me, does he?

4.    Nobody went there, did they?

5.    The pious are blessed, aren’t they?

6.     Mithu lives in Jessore, doesn’t he?

7.      He is a good player, isn’t he?

8.      I do not like him, do I?

9.     I am late, am I?

10.   Let us go back, shall we?

11.   We ought to love are country, oughtn’t we?

12.  It is a good idea, isn’t it?

13.   There is no pond in the village, is there?

14.  Everybody saw you, didn’t they?

15.   Fishes cannot fly, can they?

16.   Let us go home, shall we?

17.    She is pretty, isn’t she?

18.     Birds fly in the sky, don’t they?

19.     Birds can fly, can’t they?

20.     Do not forget me, will you?

21.     Clean water is safe, isn’t it?

22.     Nobody can help you, can they?

23.     Don’t smoke, will you?

24.     She doesn’t sing a modern song, does she?

25.    It is the man who pollutes environment, isn’t he?

26.   He need not depend on others, need he?

27.   Neither of them went, did they?

28.   Let me do the work, will you?

29.   Shut the door, will you?

30.   They did not work, did they?

31.   I have to return now, haven’t I?

32.   I am not ready now, am I?

33.   I am well, ain’t I?

34.   Nothing can concern, can it?

35.   Fire burns, doesn’t it?

36.   Every mother loves her child, don’t they?

37.   Nobody believes a liar, do they?

38.  A barking dog seldom bites, does it?

39.   Please sit down, can’t you?

40.   They will go home, won’t they?
