Simple Sentence āĻāϰ āϏংāϜ্āĻžাঃ āϝে Sentence āĻ āĻāĻ•āϟি āĻŽাāϤ্āϰ Subject āĻ“ āĻāĻ•āϟি āĻŽাāϤ্āϰ Finite verb (āϏāĻŽাāĻĒিāĻ•া āĻ•্āϰি⧟া) āĻĨাāĻ•ে, āϤাāĻ•ে Simple Sentence āĻŦāϞে।

(When a Sentence contains one subject and one finite verb, it is called simple sentence)

Simple Sentence āϚিāύিāĻŦাāϰ āωāĻĒা⧟ঃ   (For, Inspite of, instead of, by, being, to, in, lieu of, without, on, in reference to, in association with, in response to, in collaboration with, Too…..to āχāϤ্āϝাāĻĻি)

He is honest inspite of his poverty.

Because of his illness, he could not attend the meeting.

Complex Sentence āĻāϰ āϏংāϜ্āĻžাঃ āϝে Sentence āĻāϰ āĻāĻ•āϟি Principal Clause āĻāĻŦং āĻāĻ• āĻŦা āĻāĻ•াāϧিāĻ• Sbuordinate Clause āĻĨাāĻ•ে, āϤাāĻ•ে Complex Sentence āĻŦāϞে।

(When a Sentence contains one principal clause and one or more than one subordinate clause, it is called Complex Sentence)

Complex Sentence āϚিāύিāĻŦাāϰ āωāĻĒা⧟ āĻŦা āϏāύাāĻ•্āϤ āĻ•āϰাāϰ āϜāĻŖ্āϝ āĻ•িāĻ›ু Word āφāĻ›ে, āϏেāĻ—ুāϞো āĻšāϞোঃ (since, as, because, though, although, who, which, that, when, while, whenever, what, whom, where, hence, whatever, if, how, unless, so that, that, till, until āχāϤ্āϝাāĻĻি)

Although he is rich, he is honest.

He is so weak that he cannot walk.

When he came home, he began to work.

Compound Sentence āĻāϰ āϏংāϜ্āĻžাঃ āϝāĻĻি āĻ•োāύ Sentence āĻ āĻāĻ•াāϧিāĻ• Principal clause and, but, or, yet, so, therefore āχāϤ্āϝাāĻĻি co-ordinative Conjunction āĻĻ্āĻŦাāϰা āϝুāĻ•্āϤ āĻšā§Ÿ āϤাāĻ•ে Compound Sentence āĻŦāϞে।

(When a sentence has more than one principal clause joined together by co-ordinating conjunction it is called compound Sentence)

Compound Sentence āϚিāύিāĻŦাāϰ āϜāύ্āϝ āĻ•িāĻ›ু Word āφāĻ›ে āϏেāĻ—ুāϞো āĻšāϞোঃ- (and, but, or, yet, both….and, not only--- but also, either—or, neither---nor, otherwise, therefore, on the contrary āχāϤ্āϝাāĻĻি)

He is poor but he is honest

Read or you will fail

Complex āĻĨেāĻ•ে Simple āĻ“ Compound

Rule: 1. Since/as/because āĻĻ্āĻŦাāϰা Complex Sentence āĻ āĻ•াāϰāĻŖ āĻ“ āĻĢāϞাāĻĢāϞেāϰ āĻ…āϰ্āĻĨ āĻĒ্āϰāĻ•াāĻļ āĻĒেāϞে because of/for/on account of  āĻĻ্āĻŦাāϰা āĻĒāϰিāĻŦāϰ্āϤāύ āĻ•āϰে Simple Sentence āĻ•āϰāϤে āĻšā§Ÿ āĻāĻŦং and/and so āĻĻ্āĻŦাāϰা Compound āĻ•āϰāϤে āĻšā§Ÿ। āϝেāĻŽāύঃ-

Complex: Since he was ill, he could not go to school.

Simple: Because of his being ill, he could not go to school.

           Or, He could not go to school because of his illness.

Compound: He was ill and could not go to school.

Rule: 2.  Since/as/when āϝুāĻ•্āϤ clause āĻ āĻļুāϧু be verb āĻĨাāĻ•āϞে being āĻŦāϏি⧟ে Simple āĻ•āϰāϤে āĻšā§Ÿ āĻāĻŦং and āĻŦāϏি⧟ে Compound āĻ•āϰāϤে āĻšā§Ÿ। āϝেāĻŽāύঃ-

Complex: Since he was poor, he had to live from hand to mouth.

Simple: He being poor, had to live from hand to mouth.

Compound: He was poor and had to live from hand to mouth.

Rule: 3. Though/Although āϝুāĻ•্āϤ Complex Sentence āĻāϰ though/although āĻāϰ āϏ্āĻĨāϞে In spite of/Despite āϤাāϰāĻĒāϰ  Subject āĻāϰ Possessive Adj. + verb āĻāϰ āϏাāĻĨে ing āϝুāĻ•্āϤ āĻ•āϰে Simple āĻ•āϰāϤে āĻšā§Ÿ āĻāĻŦং but āĻŦ্āϝāĻŦāĻšাāϰ āĻ•āϰে Compound āĻ•āϰāϤে āĻšā§Ÿ। āϝেāĻŽāύঃ-

Complex: Although he was honest, he could not succeed in life.

Simple: In spite of his being honest, he could not succeed in life.

Compound: He was honest but could not succeed in life.

Rule: 4.  When āϝুāĻ•্āϤ Complex Sentence āĻ āφāĻ—ে āϏংāϘāϟিāϤ āĻ•াāϜāϟি Present Participle (āĻŽূāϞ verb + ing) āĻŦ্āϝāĻŦāĻšাāϰ āĻ•āϰে  Simple āĻ•āϰāϤে āĻšā§Ÿ āĻāĻŦং and āĻĻ্āĻŦাāϰা Compound āĻ•āϰāϤে āĻšā§Ÿ। āϝেāĻŽāύঃ-

Complex: When she sold her hair, she bought a gift.

Simple: Selling her hair, she bought a gift.

Compound: She sold her hair and bought a gift.

Rule: 5.  When āĻĻ্āĻŦাāϰা āϏāĻŽā§Ÿ āύিāϰ্āĻĻেāĻļāĻ• Complex Sentence āĻĨাāĻ•āϞে When it is/when it was āĻŦাāĻĻ āĻĻি⧟ে āĻĒ্āϰ⧟োāϜāύী⧟ preposition āĻŦ্āϝāĻŦāĻšাāϰ āĻ•āϰে  Simple āĻāĻŦং and āĻĻ্āĻŦাāϰা Compound āĻ•āϰāϤে āĻšā§Ÿ। āϝেāĻŽāύঃ-

Complex: When it was winter, we went there.

Simple: In winter, we went there.

Compound: It was winter and went there.

Rule: 6.  When āĻĻ্āĻŦাāϰা Complex Sentence āĻ āĻ•োāύ āĻ•াāϜ āϚāϞা āĻŦুāĻাāϞে at the time of + ing āϝুāĻ•্āϤ verb āĻŦ্āϝāĻŦāĻšাāϰ āĻ•āϰে Simple āĻāĻŦং and āĻŦ্āϝāĻŦāĻšাāϰ āĻ•āϰে Compound āĻ•āϰāϤে āĻšā§Ÿ। āϝেāĻŽāύঃ-

Complex: When he woke up, it was raining.

Simple: He woke up at the time of raining.

Compound: He woke up and it was raining.

Rule: 7.  When āĻĻ্āĻŦাāϰা Complex Sentence āĻ āĻŦ⧟āϏ āωāϞ্āϞেāĻ– āĻĨাāĻ•āϞে at/ the age of +  āĻŦ⧟āϏেāϰ āϏংāĻ–্āϝা āĻŦāϏি⧟ে Simple āĻāĻŦং and āĻĻ্āĻŦাāϰা Compound āĻ•āϰāϤে āĻšā§Ÿ। āϝেāĻŽāύঃ-

Complex: When Jerry was four years old, he came to the orphanage.

Simple: At the age of four, Jerry came to the orphanage.

            Or, At four, Jerry came to the orphanage.

Compound: Jerry was four years old and came to the orphanage.

Rule: 8.  If āĻĻ্āĻŦাāϰা āĻ—āĻ িāϤ Conditional Sentence āϟি Affirmative āĻĨাāĻ•āϞে by + ing-verb āĻāĻŦং Negative āĻĨাāĻ•āϞে without + ing-verb āĻŦ্āϝāĻŦāĻšাāϰ āĻ•āϰে Simple āĻ•āϰāϤে āĻšā§Ÿ, āϤāĻ–āύ If clause āϟি Affirmative āĻšāϞে and āĻāĻŦং Negative āĻšāϞে or āĻŦ্āϝāĻŦāĻšাāϰ āĻ•āϰে Compound āĻ•āϰāϤে āĻšā§Ÿ, āϤāĻ–āύ If you/If you do not āĻŦাāĻĻ āϝাāĻŦে। āϝেāĻŽāύঃ-

1.      Complex: If you work hard, you will succeed in life.

          Simple: By working hard, you will succeed in life.

         Compound: Work hard and you will succeed in life.

2.      Complex: If you do not read attentively, you will cut a sorry figure in the exam.

Simple: Without reading attentively, you will cut a sorry figure in the exam.

Compound: Read attentively or you will cut a sorry figure in the exam.

 

Rule: 9.  So that/that/in order that āϝুāĻ•্āϤ Complex Sentence āĻ•ে Infinitive ‘to’ āĻ…āĻĨāĻŦা in order to + āĻŽূāϞ verb āĻŦāϏি⧟ে simple āĻāĻŦং and + want to/wanted to āĻŦāϏি⧟ে Compound āĻ•āϰāϤে āĻšā§Ÿ। āϝেāĻŽāύঃ-

1.      Complex: He went to market so that he could buy a shirt.

          Simple: He went to market in order to buy a shirt.

          Or, He went to market to buy a shirt.

         Compound: He went to market and wanted to buy a shirt.

2.      Complex: We eat that we may live.

Simple: We eat to (in order to) live.

Compound: We eat and want to live.

 

Rule: 10.  Unless āϝুāĻ•্āϤ Complex Sentence āĻ•ে  without/in case of/ but for āĻĻ্āĻŦাāϰা āĻĒāϰিāĻŦāϰ্āϤāύ āĻ•āϰে Simple āĻāĻŦং or āĻŦ্āϝāĻŦāĻšাāϰ āĻ•āϰে Compound āĻ•āϰāϤে āĻšā§Ÿ। āϝেāĻŽāύঃ-

1.      Complex: Unless you work hard, you cannot shine in life.

          Simple: Without working hard, you cannot shine in life.

         Compound: Work hard or you cannot shine in life.

 

Rule: 11.  Relative Pronoun āĻĻ্āĻŦাāϰা Complex Sentence

a)      Relative Pronoun āĻāϰ āĻĒāϰ ‘be’ verb + Adjective āĻĨাāĻ•āϞে āϏেāχ Adjective āĻ•ে Antecedent āĻāϰ āĻĒূāϰ্āĻŦে āĻŦāϏি⧟ে Simple āĻ•āϰāϤে āĻšā§Ÿ । āϝেāĻŽāύঃ-

Complex: I saw a man who was very old.

          Simple: I saw a very old man.

b)     Relative Pronoun āĻĻ্āĻŦাāϰা Complex Sentence (who, which, that) āĻĻ্āĻŦাāϰা āϝুāĻ•্āϤ verb āϟিāϰ āϏাāϧাāϰāύāϤ Present Participle (āĻŽূāϞ verb + ing) āĻŦ্āϝāĻŦāĻšাāϰ āĻ•āϰে Simple āĻ•āϰāϤে āĻšā§Ÿ āĻāĻŦং And āĻĻ্āĻŦাāϰা  Compound āĻ•āϰāϤে āĻšā§Ÿ। āϝেāĻŽāύঃ-

Complex: He lived in a house which belonged to Mr. Rahman.

          Simple: He lived in a house belonging to Mr. Rahman.

          Compound: He lived in a house and it belonged to Mr. Rahman.

c)      Relative Pronoun āĻāϰ āĻĒāϰ Passive āĻĨাāĻ•āϞে Past Participle Phrase āĻŦ্āϝāĻŦāĻšাāϰ āĻ•āϰে  Simple āĻ•āϰāϤে āĻšā§Ÿ āĻāĻŦং  Auxiliary Verb āĻŦাāĻĻ āϝা⧟ । āϝেāĻŽāύঃ-

 

Complex: This is the book which is written by Mr. Azad.

          Simple: This is the book written by Mr. Azad.

 

 

Compound āĻĨেāĻ•ে Simple āĻ“ Complex

Rule:1. And āĻĻ্āĻŦাāϰা āϝুāĻ•্āϤ Compound Sentence āĻ āĻĒ্āϰāĻĨāĻŽ Clause āϟি āĻĻ্āĻŦাāϰা āĻ•াāϰāύ āĻāĻŦং āĻ…āĻĒāϰ  Clause āϟি āĻĻ্āĻŦাāϰা āĻĢāϞাāĻĢāϞ āĻĒ্āϰāĻ•াāĻļ āĻĒেāϞে  Since/as/because āĻĻ্āĻŦাāϰা  Complex āĻāĻŦং  because of āĻĻ্āĻŦাāϰা  Simple āĻ•āϰāϤে āĻšā§Ÿ। āĻ•াāϰāύ āĻĒ্āϰāĻ•াāĻļāĻ• āĻ…ংāĻļে very āĻĨাāĻ•āϞে  too---to +  āĻŽূāϞ verb āĻŦāϏি⧟ে  simple āĻāĻŦং  so—that āĻŦāϏি⧟ে  complex āĻ•āϰা āϝেāϤে āĻĒাāϰে।

Compound: He was very weak and could not go to school.

Simple: Because of his being very weak, he could not go to school.

           Or, He was too weak to go to school.

Complex: Since he was very weak, he could not go to school.

           Or, He was so weak that he could not go to school.

 

Rule:2. But āϝুāĻ•্āϤ Compound Sentence āĻ•ে in spite of/despite āĻŦ্āϝāĻŦāĻšাāϰ āĻ•āϰে Simple āĻāĻŦং though/although āĻŦ্āϝāĻŦāĻšাāϰ āĻ•āϰে Complex āĻ•āϰāϤে āĻšāϝ়।

 

Compound: He walked fast but he could not reach school in time.

Simple: In spite of walking fast, he could not reach school in time.

Complex: Although he walked fast, he could not reach school in time.

 

Rule:3.  And āϝুāĻ•্āϤ Compound Sentence āĻĻ্āĻŦাāϰা

 

(a) āφāĻ—েāϰ āĻ•াāϜেāϰ āϜāύ্āϝ Present participle ( āĻŽূāϞ verb + ing) āĻŦ্āϝāĻŦāĻšাāϰ āĻ•āϰে Simple āĻāĻŦং When āĻŦ্āϝāĻŦāĻšাāϰ āĻ•āϰে Complex āĻ•āϰāϤে āĻšāϝ়। āϝেāĻŽāύ:-

Compound: I closed the door and went to work.

Simple: Closing the door, I went to work.

Complex: When I closed the door, I went to work.

 

(b) āϏāĻŽāϝ় āĻŦুāĻাāϞে āϏāĻŽāϝ়েāϰ āφāĻ—ে Preposition āĻŦāϏিāϝ়ে Simple āĻāĻŦং when āĻŦāϏিāϝ়ে Complex āĻ•āϰāϤে āĻšāϝ়। Simple āĻ•āϰাāϰ āϏāĻŽāϝ়- it is / it was āĻŦাāĻĻ āϝাāĻŦে। āϝেāĻŽāύ:-

Compound: It was day light and I was awakened by the sound of chopping.

Simple: At day light, I was awakened by the sound of chopping.

Complex: When it was day light, I was awakened by the sound of chopping.

 

(c) āĻŦāϝ়āϏ āĻŦুāĻাāϞে at/at the age of + āĻŦāϝ়āϏেāϰ āϏংāĻ–্āϝা āĻŦāϏিāϝ়ে Simple  āĻāĻŦং When āĻŦāϏি⧟ে Complex āĻ•āϰāϤে āĻšāϝ়। āϝেāĻŽāύঃ

Compound: He was 70 years old and breathed his last.

Simple: At the age of 70, he breathed his last.

Complex: When he was 70 years old, he breathed his last.

 

Rule:4. And āĻĻ্āĻŦাāϰা Compound Sentence āĻ āφāĻ—েāϰ clause Imperative āĻšāϞে by + ing āϝুāĻ•্āϤ verb āĻŦ্āϝāĻŦāĻšাāϰ āĻ•āϰে Simple āĻāĻŦং if you āĻŦ্āϝāĻŦāĻšাāϰ āĻ•āϰে Complex Sentence āĻ•āϰāϤে āĻšāϝ়। āϝেāĻŽāύ:-

Compound: Work hard and you will prosper in life.

Simple: By working hard, you will prosper in life.

Complex: If you work hard, you will prosper in life.

 

Rule:5. Or āϝুāĻ•্āϤ Compound Sentence āĻ•ে without + ing āϝুāĻ•্āϤ verb āĻŦ্āϝāĻŦāĻšাāϰ āĻ•āϰে Simple āĻāĻŦং If you do not āĻŦ্āϝāĻŦāĻšাāϰ āĻ•āϰে Complex āĻ•āϰāϤে āĻšāϝ়। āϝেāĻŽāύ:-

Compound: Eat proper food or you will get attacked with various diseases.

Simple: Without eating proper food, you will get attacked with various diseases.

Complex: If you do not eat proper food, you will get attacked with various diseases.

 

Simple āĻĨেāĻ•ে Complex āĻ“ Compound

 

Rule: 1.  Participle āĻĻ্āĻŦাāϰা āĻ•াāϰāĻŖ āĻĒ্āϰāĻ•াāĻļ āĻĒেāϞে Since/As āĻĻ্āĻŦাāϰা Complex āĻāĻŦং and/and so āĻŦāϏিāϝ়ে Compound āĻ•āϰāϤে āĻšāϝ়। āϝেāĻŽāύ:-

Simple: Killing the albatross, he brought bad luck to others.

Complex: As/Since he killed the albatross, he brought bad luck to others.

Compound: He killed the albatross and brought bad luck to others.

 

Rule:2. Being āĻĻ্āĻŦাāϰা Simple Sentence āĻ āĻ•াāϰāĻŖ āĻĒ্āϰāĻ•াāĻļ āĻĒেāϞে Since/as āĻĻ্āĻŦাāϰা Complex āĻāĻŦং and āĻĻ্āĻŦাāϰা Compound āĻ•āϰāϤে āĻšāϝ়। āĻ…āĻĒāϰ clause āϟি Present Tense being āĻ•ে am/is/are āĻāĻŦং Past Tense āĻšāϞে was/were āĻŦāϏাāϤে āĻšāϝ়। āϝেāĻŽāύ:-

Simple: The man, being poor, cannot buy a house.

Complex: Since the man is poor, he cannot buy a house.

Compound: The man is poor and cannot buy a house.

 

Rule: 3. Being āϝāĻĻি āĻ•োāύ āĻ•াāϜ āĻ•āϰাāϰ āϏāĻŽāϝ়েāϰ āϏাāĻĨে āϏংāĻļ্āϞিāώ্āϟ āĻĨাāĻ•ে āϤāĻŦে when āĻĻ্āĻŦাāϰা Complex

āĻāĻŦং and āĻĻ্āĻŦাāϰা Compound āĻ•āϰāϤে āĻšāϝ়। āϝেāĻŽāύ:-

Simple: Time, being over, we started for home.

Complex: When time was over, we started for home.

Compound: Time was over and we started for home.

 

Rule:4. Simple Sentence āĻ Too---to + āĻŽূāϞ verb āĻĨাāĻ•āϞে  So---that āĻŦ্āϝāĻŦāĻšাāϰ āĻ•āϰে Complex āĻāĻŦং and āĻĻ্āĻŦাāϰা Compound āĻ•āϰāϤে āĻšāϝ়। āϝেāĻŽāύঃ-

Simple: The man is too honest to show excuse.

Complex: The man is so honest that he cannot show excuse.

Compound: The man is very honest and cannot show excuse.

 

Rule:5. To + āĻŽূāϞ verb/In order to + āĻŽূāϞ verb āĻĻ্āĻŦাāϰা āωāĻĻ্āĻĻেāĻļ্āϝāĻŽূāϞāĻ•  āĻŦাāĻ•্āϝāĻ•ে  so that/ in order that āĻŦ্āϝāĻŦāĻšাāϰ āĻ•āϰে Complex  āĻāĻŦং and āĻŦ্āϝāĻŦāĻšাāϰ āĻ•āϰে Compound āĻ•āϰāϤে āĻšāϝ়। āϝেāĻŽāύ:-

Simple: We should take a balanced diet to be healthy.

Complex: We should take a balanced diet so that we can be healthy.

Compound: We want to be healthy and should take a balanced diet.

 

Rule:6. In spite of/Despite āĻĻ্āĻŦাāϰা  Simple Sentence āĻĨাāĻ•āϞে though/although āĻĻ্āĻŦাāϰা Complex āĻāĻŦং but āĻĻ্āĻŦাāϰা Compound āĻ•āϰāϤে āĻšāϝ়। āϝেāĻŽāύ:-

Simple: In spite of his being poor, he is very happy.

Complex: Though he is poor, he is very happy.

Compound: He is poor but very happy.

 

Rule:7. Because of/on account of/for āĻĻ্āĻŦাāϰা āϝুāĻ•্āϤ āĻ•াāϰāĻŖ āĻĒ্āϰāĻ•াāĻļāĻ• āĻ…ংāĻļেāϰ āĻĒāϰিāĻŦāϰ্āϤে Since/As/Because + Subject + verb āĻŦ্āϝāĻŦāĻšাāϰ āĻ•āϰে Complex āĻāĻŦং  and/and so āĻŦ্āϝāĻŦāĻšাāϰ āĻ•āϰে Compound āĻ•āϰāϤে āĻšāϝ়। āϝেāĻŽāύ:-

Simple: Because of having riches, he can help the poor.

Complex: Since/As he has riches, he can help the poor.

Compound: He has riches and so can help the poor.

 

Rule:8. Subject + See/find  āĻāϰ āĻĒāϰে Pronominal object (me, us, you, him, her, them) āĻĨাāĻ•āϞে that āĻŦ্āϝāĻŦāĻšাāϰ āĻ•āϰে Complex āĻāĻŦং and āĻŦ্āϝāĻŦāĻšাāϰ āĻ•āϰে Compound āĻ•āϰāϤে āĻšāϝ়। āϝেāĻŽāύঃ-

Simple: I saw him reading a newspaper.

Complex: I saw that he was reading a newspaper.

Compound: He was reading a newspaper and I saw him.

 

Rule:9. āĻ•োāύ phrase āĻĻ্āĻŦাāϰা āĻ•োāύ āĻŦিāώāϝ় āĻ•ীāĻ āĻ…āϰ্āĻĨ āĻĒ্āϰāĻ•াāĻļ āĻĒেāϞে what āĻŦ্āϝāĻŦāĻšাāϰ āĻ•āϰে Complex

āĻ•āϰāϤে āĻšāϝ়। āϝেāĻŽāύ:-

Simple: I know his name.

Complex: I know what his name is.

 

Rule:10. Simple Sentence āĻĻ্āĻŦাāϰ āϚিāϰāύ্āϤāύ āϏāϤ্āϝ (Universal Truth) āĻĒ্āϰāĻ•াāĻļ āĻĒেāϞে It is + subject + Relative ‍Pronoun + āĻŦাāĻ•ী āĻ…ংāĻļ āĻŦāϏিāϝ়ে Complex āĻ•āϰāϤে āĻšāϝ়।

Simple: Health is wealth.

Complex: It is health which is wealth.
